The 40 Year Old Virgin
Should have been labelled a horror movie.
Whilst the first half has some funny scenes and lines, the second half really drags.
This is a subtle update of Invasion of The Body Snatchers. More aptly this is a reversal of The Stepford Wives. It's about taking men and converting them into what society expects of them.
At the start we have 4 guys mostly happy with the way things are.
By the end, 1 will beceom an alcoholic in deep depression for failing at a relationship 2 years prior, 1 will be ensared and have all his prized material possessions spent, 1 will be under the spell of a psycho, 1 will be brought under control through his unborn child.
The love interest, Trish, is a classic vampire character. An old lady who ensnares a younger man. She is old and used up. She has slept around and openly admits being banged by bad boys her whole life. She even has 3 kids. She has been married, but no indication whose kids are whose. Hell, she even expected her husband to wear condoms when they had sex, but has such a variety that some of them surely weren't for her husband at all.
Her store is a perfect metaphor for herself. The store only contains things you can't buy, until you have competed with others and are willing to pay the highest price.
Now she is ready to have a relationship with a nice guy, and the point of the movie is that Andy, the main character and virgin, is supposed to be grateful for it. He only has to give up his posessions(to pay for a wedding to someone who has been around the block and already married before), his easy lifestyle (so he can open his own store and have all that resulting pressure) and his sexual desires (the first woman is going to be the only woman he's ever going to be with).
I'm sure some people have already labelled it misogynistic because it features women as less than perfect, but it does quite the opposite. It teaches that women can sleep with hundreds of guys, pop out some sprogs and then have some nice guy come along with lots of money and marry them.
This movie reinforces the need to never get emotionally involved with women as they will destroy you financially, emotionally or physically.
